I have a lot of things to do with my hobby IT, and we've got to figure out the right order to do things, and how future-proof our decisions seem to be.
We've got to decide on the future of our televisual consumption. The move to digital is inevitable, but how best to approach it. Our plan for an integrated digital tuner in the new TV sounds good, but if that's the only tuner you've got, you have to leave the TV on to records stuff when you're out.
I never leave the TV on standby if I can help it. Frankly the concept of standby, although sold on the allegation that the TV will wake up quicker, is just a couch potato's charter. The TV doesn't start any quicker, all it means is that you can turn it on without letting your backside get cold.
Despite industry research, Standby mode remains an unforgiveable waste of energy. I suspect that the new flat screen TV will actually use less power showing me pictures that my current CRT does in standby. And I still won't be using standby.
An external tuner will be cheap and re-usable. Even if I get a twin tuner pvr, the external tuner can be used on another TV elsewhere. It's probably the best way forward for now.
And now I have to decide on the best service provider for my DSL and whether to move to a dedicated host for this website. All the options to weigh up, the small print to read. It's getting to be a bit of a drag.
